I liked it

I've been a backer on all of Michael's books and I gotta admit (though never to his face cause I'd just rudely be staring at the forrid), this bogan can craft a tale. I was mildy concerned about Bancroft not drawing this book but Rod's got a subtle style that really fits within the world of the Lucent. Although it's a prequel, Fractured Mind builds on the Lucent lore and provides a trou normand as we await the 3rd course.

Excellent

The Lucent: Fractured Mind is an outstanding prequel that immediately pulled me into its world. Even without reading the rest of the series, the story stands on its own while leaving you eager to see what happens next. The pacing is excellent, the mystery builds naturally, and the psychological elements keep you turning the pages.
The artwork by Rod Luper is fantastic, and Michael Bancroft’s cover is absolutely stunning—it perfectly captures the eerie, dreamlike atmosphere of the story. The colors, panel layouts, and overall presentation are top-notch, making this feel like a premium comic from start to finish.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, supernatural mysteries, or indie comics with compelling world-building, this is an easy recommendation. I can’t wait to read the next chapter in The Lucent series. Plus, Bancroft is hot, so that helps
A lot.

A worthy prequel to Waking Dream

So it finally arrived: the stealth prequel which I was only dimly aware of, the few times I caught Michael Bancroft's livestreams early in the United Kingdom's mornings. Many inuendo-laden mentions of "The Rod" aside, I was interested in what would come of Rod Louper's interpretation of Michael's characters. I have to admit that I was somewhat dreading it, because The Lucent is so much Michael's creation.

The story about the comic which Michael told six years ago on Ethan van Sciver's channel really connected with me. My entry into comics is not the DC, Marvel or Image journey which most ComicsGate or adjacent people had. I got into the Sandman in my mid-20s, and really only read Vertigo titles. Michael was coming from that direction too, but had a really personal and mysterious premise that came from his own experiments in lucid dreaming.

The Lucent comics are something special, and I really hoped that Rod Louper wouldn't ruin the story for me. He didn't. His style is different, but it was close enough that it didn't jar. In any case, the fact that the entire story takes place in Ella's dreams would be enough to explain any differences for me.

The story marks a transition in Ella's inner life. As far as we can tell, she has been playing out a dream scenario each night where she plays a superhero breaking up an dog-fighting ring in an abandoned warehouse. However, this time the mysterious Damon Spector appears, who like Ella can control dreams, and causes the scenario to mutate. The art goes beyond superheroics to downright surreal as Ella's dream power is pushed to new levels. But with that comes a new awareness that the scenario she has been replaying is a distortion of two traumatic events in her life she has repressed (one of which we saw in the second prologue, and one of which was briefly touched in one of the appendix "interviews", of Waking Dream).

This is a good side-story which is not essential to read, unlike the two full-Bancroft books, but is definitely worth your time. I am not giving this 5 stars, because Waking Dream and Painted Death were so bloody good, and we need to discriminate! And in any case, I prefer Michael's artwork. I look forward to the next collaboration with Rod Louper.
