As a follow-up to Waking Dream, All Are Worthy!

After a two page precis of Waking Dream, we are transported back to BC land, where we see that the Olam has changed venue to the seaside, and name to Utnapishtim. No less than Gilgamesh has journeyed to learn the secret of immortality. But of course, it's not going to be that easy. At least he gives us the title of the book.

Finally, the present-day story opens out, and characters we have seen now are recontextualised when you learn their relationships and the knowledge until now hidden from us. Returning to Ella, it seems she is in big trouble, being the epicenter of what people think was an explosion. Her dream buddy Damon, who saw Ella's return from dream at the end of the last book now takes on an active role, and we now see thathe can use his powers in the real world. After rescuing her, they return to her "grandfather's" house to find out that he isn't the man either of them thought he was, and is very important And it seems the Marechal from the first book is still looking for Ella, and now knows who has been protecting her. We get another flashback to Artemas, the poor bloke who Ella saw having his family murdered by Roman soldiers, and Ish'um. This subplot is one of the more mysterious ones, and is not resolved in this book. Most of the last third to half of the book involves a chase with Marechal's forces trying to capture Ella. And like the end of the Matrix, Ella finally self-actualises.

This is a fine follow-up to Waking Dream. Things are gradually piecing themselves together. A few things are resolved, but new questions arise. The artwork is excellent as before, and the blue-green colour palette is continued in all the present day sequences.

This is the hardcover edition. The book is larger than the softcover so you can better appreciate the art, and have something cool on your bookshelf. The only criticism is that the cover doesn't really tell you much about the book, since it is from the Gilgamesh flashback.

All in all, Michael Bancroft has created a fine second part to The Lucent, and has not compromised the promise apparent in Waking Dream. I can't wait until the Ember Crown comes out!!

A new world to discover

While we were used to comics from Soleil and Delcourt editions in Europe, we are delighted to read an Australian author who is embarking on something that does not seem to be the norm in bookstores. A beautiful story, superb illustrations, a beautiful work that we keep preciously!
